Boone & Sons Jewelers
Their Mistake Was My Problem by Eric of Arlington, 7/16/2004 In our first dealing with Boone and Sons, we had high hopes based on our assessment that they were the friendliest shop we walked through at Tysons Corner and their selection was to our liking. On our second trip we placed an order for a wedding band for each of us. Six weeks later, as promised, my wife's ring was ready for pickup. Much to our surprise, however, we found out that Boone and Sons had never placed the order for my ring from their supplier. Now we were within a timeframe where normal delivery times wouldn't allow for delivery before our wedding date. A mistake can certainly be overcome and we were pleased when Boone and Sons got the order rushed and the ring would be ready by our wedding date. A week before our wedding, the ring was ready. I went to pick it up and discovered that they had ordered it in the wrong material. My receipt clearly stated white gold and the ring they ordered was in platinum. Now, their second mistake (both being blatant errors) would preclude me from having a wedding band in time for my wedding. They offered a small discount to offset the mistake, but even with the discount, the platinum ring was 3 times the cost of the white gold ring I had ordered. I felt that their weak attempt at a discount wasn't nearly commensurate with the inconvenience they had caused me, especially considering the markup on jewelry. I later found out that Kenny, the "salesman" who had sold us the rings, was actually their security guard and was enlisted as a salesman because they were short on personnel. Being a middle-aged, neatly dressed man, we had an expectation that he was experienced in jewelry sales and, at the very least, capable of taking a simple order. Not true. Kenny had very little experience, and it showed in the results. I drove down Hwy 7 to Charleston Alexander where I bought the same ring (in white gold!) for about the same price. It showed up correctly the first time around. I don't recommend Boone and Sons based on their lack of concern that their mistakes cost me having a ring in time for my wedding. I would paraphrase their reaction to my dilemma as "oh well, stuff happens." |
